differential windlass n (Mechanical Engineering) a windlass employing the velocity ratio incurred in unwinding from a small drum while winding onto a larger drum rotating at a common speed. Also called: Chinese windlass differential windlass
differential windlass[‚dif·ə′ren·chəl ′wind·ləs] (mechanical engineering) A windlass in which the barrel has two sections, each having a different diameter; the rope winds around one section, passes through a pulley (which carries the load), then winds around the other section of the barrel. |
