Fehmarn
an island in the western Baltic Sea, between Kiel and Mecklenburg bays. Population, 13,300 (1969). The island belongs to the Federal Republic of Germany. It covers 185 sq km in area and rises to a maximum elevation of 27 m. Fehmarn Island is separated from the mainland by the Fehmarnsund, a sound measuring approximately 1 km in width that is spanned by a bridge. The island is linked by railroad ferry with the island of Lolland, which belongs to Denmark.
Fringed by broad, sandy beaches, Fehmarn Island has several summer seaside health resorts. Grains and sugar beets are cultivated on the island and sheep are raised. There is also fishing.
