El Teniente

a populated place in Chile, in Cachapoal Province; situated in the Andes at an elevation of 2,800-3,000 m. Population, more than 10,000 (1970). El Teniente ranks second only to Chuquicamata as an important Chilean copper-mining and smelting center.
