Brush, Charles (Francis)

(1849–1929) engineer, inventor; born in Euclid Township, Ohio. A farmer's son, he took a mining engineering degree from the University of Michigan (1869) and worked as a chemist and an iron merchant before leaving business to devote full time to his electrical inventions. In 1879 the city of Cleveland adopted his Brush arc light. It soon went into use worldwide. The arc light made his fortune, and he devoted his late years to theoretical research and philanthropy.
