a city in southern Guatemala. Capital of Escuintla Department. Population, 62,500 (1971). Escuintla is connected by railroad with Guatemala City and with the Pacific Ocean port of San José. The commercial center of an agricultural region that produces coffee, cotton, and sugarcane, Escuintla has a food-processing industry. An oil refinery is also located in the city.
