In south-central SD, west of Sioux Falls; created Jan 14, 1875 (prior to statehood) from Buffalo County. Name Origin: For the Brule tribe of Sioux Indians. French 'burned,' partial transliteration of sicangu 'burned thighs,' a name derisively given to a group of Sioux who tried to raid the Pawnees, who set the plains on fire. Many of the unsuccessful raiders were badly burned but escaped.
