Falls Church,

independent city (1990 pop. 9,578), NE Va., a residential suburb of Washington, D.C.; inc. as a town 1875, as a city 1948. There is diverse light manufacturing, including telecommunications equipment. George Washington and George Mason (author of the Virginia Bill of Rights) were members of the vestry of the Falls Church (built 1767–69).

In northeastern VA, west of Washington, D.C., near the Little Falls of the Potomac River. Established in 1850, incorporated as a town in 1875; as a city in 1948. Name Origin: For an Anglican church, so named for its location near the falls, built in the area about 1769
