Bambundu

Bambundu

 

(Ambundu, Ambuun, Mbuni), a people living in the Portuguese colony of Angola, in the Cuanza Basin and in the vicinity of Luanda. Population, 1.3 million (1967 estimate).

The language of the Bambundu is Kimbundu, which belongs to the Bantu language family. A considerable number of the Bambundu adhere to traditional beliefs, but some are Christian. Their basic occupation is slash-and-burn agriculture (cassava, yams, and sweet potatoes). The Bambundu also work on coffee plantations and in sugarcane fields owned by Europeans.
