Brown, Tony

(1933– ) television host, producer; born in Charleston, W.Va. A journalist in Detroit, he joined National Educational Television's newsmagazine, Black Journal, in 1970, later becoming dean of Howard University's School of Communications (1971–72). He lobbied to keep the show on the air, and as host and executive producer of Tony Brown's Journal (1978), he continued to look critically at issues facing African-Americans.
