Established: Authorized on October 19, 1978.
Location:In downtown Fort Scott, Kansas, at the intersection of US 69 and 54. It is 90 miles south of Kansas City and 4 miles from the Kansas-Missouri border.
Facilities:Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.

Special Features:Established in 1842 as a base for the U.S. Army's peacekeeping effortsalong the "permanent Indian frontier," the fort was manned by U.S.Dragoons and infantry soldiers who served in the Mexican War, providedarmed escorts for parties on the Santa Fe and Oregon trails, surveyedunmapped country, and maintained contact with Plains Indians. The postwas abandoned in 1853 and reactivated during the Civil War as a supplyand training center. The restored and reconstructed buildings preservethe U.S. frontier of the 1840s and 1850s. Today the site consists of 20historic structures, aparade ground and five acres of restored tallgrass prairie.
