BroussonetiaBroussonetiaa genus of trees and shrubs of the Moraceae family. These are monoecious plants. The leaves are petiolate, whole, or lobed, with deciduous stipules. There are six to eight species in eastern Asia and Polynesia. High-quality paper (for money, government documents, and so forth) is made from the bark of young shoots of the paper mulberry (B. papyrifera), native to eastern Asia. The local population also makes clothing (so-called tapa, or kapa) and rope from the bark. In the USSR the paper mulberry is raised mostly in the Crimea, the Caucasus, and in Middle Asia. Another species (B. kazinoki) grows wild on the Korean peninsula and in Japan and also serves as a source of high-quality paper. In the USSR it is cultivated in Sukhumi. M. E.
