Dubovka

a city, the center of Dubovka Raion, Volgograd Oblast, RSFSR. A landing on the right bank of the Volgograd Reservoir, 52 km northeast of Volgograd, with which it is connected by highway.

Dubovka was founded in 1734 as a a city of the Volga Cossacks, who were settled there in order to protect the Lower Volga Region. It was one of the important centers of the uprising led by E. I. Pugachev; for their participation in this revolt 517 cossack families were exiled to the Caucasus in 1777. The deserted Dubovka was resettled by peasant colonists. During the first half of the 19th century Dubovka became a major warehousing point. With the construction of the railroad connecting the Volga with the Don through Tsaritsyn (now Volgograd), the importance of Dubovka declined. It has factories for metal products, fish processing, fruit processing, woodworking, and carpet weaving. Located in Dubovka is a large road for the re-forming of raft floats proceeding from the upper reaches of the Volga and the Kama; these floats must be re-formed so that they can pass through the Volgograd hydrocomplex and the Volga-Don Canal. The city also has a zoological and veterinary technicum and a teacher-training school. The region specializes in the cultivation of melons,especially watermelons.

an urban-type settlement in Tula Oblast, RSFSR. Located 9 km south of the city of Uzlovaia. Population, 13,000 (1970). Its industries include coal mining and the manufacture of footwear. There is also a keyboard factory and a winery.
