Ellsworth Land the part of Western Antarctica southwest of the Antarctic Peninsula, between 62° and 102° W long. The Filchner Ice Shelf extends into the western part of Ellsworth Land. The ice sheet, which lies at an elevation of 2,000 m, varies in thickness from 1,000 to 3,000 m. In the central part of Ellsworth Land the Ellsworth Mountains, with elevations reaching 5,140 m (the highest point in Antarctica), rise above the glacial surface. Ellsworth Land was discovered in 1935 by L. Ellsworth. |
