(elz'wŏrth how'ărd), measurement of serum and urinary phosphorus after intravenous administration of parathyroid extract; used in the diagnosis of pseudohypoparathyroidism.

Ellsworth-Howard test

A term of waning use for the administration of exogenous parathyroid hormone to distinguish primary hypoparathyroidism—in which the urinary phosphate levels rise 10-fold or more above baseline levels—from pseudohypoparathyroidism—in which they essentially do not rise.
