Established Apr 19, 1912 from New York County. The county is coterminous with the borough of the Bronx, part of New York City. The only borough of New York City that is not on an island. Name Origin: For Jonas Bronck or Bronk (?-1643), the first European settler north of the Harlem River. His farm was called "Broncksland." the borough is usually called "The Bronx."
