Brongniart, Adolphe Théodore
(ädôlf` tāōdôr` brôNyär`), 1801–76, French botanist; son of Alexandre Brongniart. He was a pioneer in the study of plant morphology and physiology and was author of an important work on plant fossils (1828–37) and of a valuable first account of pollen. His classification of plants in the natural history museum at Paris was the basis of the system now used in Germany and developed by Adolph EnglerEngler, Adolf, 1844–1930, German botanist. He emphasized the importance of geological history in the study of plant geography, and worked out an influential system of plant classification. A professor at the Univ.

Born Jan. 14, 1801, in Paris; died there on Feb. 18, 1876. French botanist and member of the French Academy of Sciences.
Brongniart was the son of Alexandre Brongniart. He laid the foundations of paleobotany. From 1833 he was a professor of botany and the physiology of plants at the Paris Museum of Natural History. He was one of the founders of the journal Annals of the Natural Sciences. Brongniart wrote detailed works on embryology (1828), plant physiology (1831), paleobotany (1828-38), and the history of botany (1868).
