1809–98, British statesman, the dominant personality of the Liberal party from 1868 until 1894. A great orator and a master of finance, he was deeply religious and brought a highly moralistic tone to politics.

 he achieved several important improvements in the postal system. His wife, Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett, 1847–1929, noted English feminist, became the leader of the nonmilitant suffragists. She was made Dame of the British Empire in 1924.
