Ellipse of Inertia
Ellipse of Inertia
in strength of materials, a graphic representation used to calculate the axial and centrifugal moments of inertia of a plane figure, such as the cross section of a rod, with respect to axes passing through its center of gravity. In constructing an ellipse of inertia, its semiaxes, which are numerically equal to the principal radii of gyration of the figure, are superposed on its principal central axes.
