Elliot, Walter (Hackett Robert)

(1842–1928) Catholic priest, writer; born in Detroit, Mich. A lawyer and Civil War veteran, he was inspired by a sermon of Father Isaac Hecker to become (1872) a Paulist priest. His books included an 1891 biography of Hecker that in translation caused a furor in France and led to papal condemnation of modernism.
