1892–1987, French physicist. In 1928 he became professor in the faculty of sciences, Univ. of Paris. It was known from the earlier quantum theoryquantum theory,
modern physical theory concerned with the emission and absorption of energy by matter and with the motion of material particles; the quantum theory and the theory of relativity together form the theoretical basis of modern physics.

He was elected permanent secretary of the Academy of Sciences in 1942. In recognition of his talents as a writer, he was elected to the French Academy in 1944.
