Foyt, A. J.

(Anthony Joseph Foyt, Jr.), 1935–, American auto-racing driver, b. Houston. Foyt was the first person to win the Indianapolis 500 race four times (1961, 1964, 1967, 1977). He also won the Daytona 500 and, with Dan Gurney, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He was U.S. Auto Club driving champion seven times.

Foyt, A. J. (Anthony Joseph, Jr.)

(1935– ) auto racer; born in Houston, Texas. He drove a miniature car at age four and midget cars at age 11. He began to race professionally in 1953. He won the Indianapolis 500 (1961, 1964, 1967, 1977) and the U.S. Auto Club Championship (1960, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1967, 1975, 1979). Although he suffered accidents in 1965 and 1966, they did not deter him from his career. He also bred and trained horses.
