Ellenborough, Edward Law, 1st earl of

(ĕl`ənbûr'ə), 1790–1871, British statesman; son of the 1st Baron Ellenborough. He served as president of the Board of Control of the East India Company (1828–30, 1834–35, 1841) and as governor-general of India (1841–44). His main achievement was the annexation of Sind (1843). After his return to England he was created (1844) earl, was first lord of the admiralty (1846), and served again as president of the Board of Control (1858).
