a group of artists who were students and followers of K. P. Briullov. Most of his students are associated with the Briullov school. They mastered the external and idyllic features of Briullov’s romantic striving, superficially adopted his manner of painting or directly copied him, and borrowed characters and subjects typical of his work. The best-known artists of the school are la. F. Kapkov, who painted in the so-called academic genre (The Bride, 1851, Tret’iakov Gallery); P. N. Orlov, painter of salon portraits and idealized scenes of Italian folk life (October Festival in Rome, 1851, Tret’iakov Gallery); A. V. Tyranov (portrait of I. K. Aivazovskii, 1841, Tret’ —iakov Gallery); and A. M. Maksimov, who painted mainly icons. T. G. Shevchenko, who was strongly influenced by Briullov at the beginning of his creative career but later followed his own path, is usually placed in the Briullov school.
