Cropsey, Jasper (Francis)

(1823–1900) painter; born in Staten Island, N.Y. He studied architecture, but after traveling in Europe (1847 and 1856), he settled in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. (1864), and concentrated on landscape painting. Considered a member of the Hudson River School of painting, his theatrical and naturalistic canvases, such as View of the Kaaterskill House (1855), and Autumn on the Hudson River (1860), reveal his romantic approach to nature.
