Clarke, Francis Devereux

Clarke, Francis Devereux

(1849–1913) educator of the deaf; born in Raleigh, N.C. He served in the Confederate navy as a teenager and trained as an engineer while teaching at New York Institution for the Deaf. As superintendent of Arkansas Institute for the Deaf (1885–92) and Michigan State School for the Deaf (1892–1913) he expanded both institutions and revised their curricula.
