Diaphanoscopy is carried out in a darkened room using a special electric light attached to a handle. To examine the maxillary (Highmore) sinuses, the light is inserted into the subject’s mouth; to determine the state of the frontal sinus, the light is set against the upper inside corner of the eye sockets. Where there are pathological changes (inflammation, tumor) the affected site will appear darkened. A special light mounted in a special metallic capsule is used in transillumination of the eye.
