Berdyzh

a paleolithic site near the village of Berdyzh in Chechersk Raion, Gomel’ Oblast, Byelorussian SSR. It was investigated in 1926–29 and 1938–39 by K. M. Polikarpovich and S. N. Zamiatin and in 1959–61 by V. D. Bud’ko. A great number of animal bones, chiefly those of mammoths, were found. Among the stone implements uncovered were spearheads with grooved edges, scrapers, primitive chisels, and knifelike plates. An even earlier cultural stratum, dated by some archaeologists as belonging to the Mousterian epoch, was discovered in 1953, 100–120 m southwest of Berdyzh.
