Diamond Boring Machine

Diamond Boring Machine

a specialized boring machine designed mainly for final (fine) boring of holes with a diamond or hard metal rotating tool. It is possible to adapt a diamond boring machine for final machining of external cylindrical surfaces and also flat surfaces. Horizontal multispindle diamond boring machines which are semiautomatic and have a movable table for processing particular parts in large-scale or mass production are the most common. Single-spindle diamond boring machines are preferable for small-scale manufacturing, where they have manual control with automated elements. The operating feed in diamond boring machines is accomplished by shifting the machined part or instrument.

The principal advantage of the diamond boring machine is the combination of very high accuracy (for machining with cutting tools) and cleanliness of the machined surfaces with high productivity. On the best modern diamond boring machines, for example, the roundness of the finished holes when machining hard items has a maximum error of 0.5–1.0 microns, depending on the size of the machine and the surface being machined, and the surface quality is not over V 9 for steel and V 12 for nonferrous metals and alloys. (The symbol V is a Soviet indication of surface roughness.)

Diamond boring machines are being used more and more widely in machine and instrument manufacturing.
