city and administrative center of Agdam Raion, Azerbaijan SSR, near the eastern foothills of the Karabakh mountain ridge, on the edge of the Karabakh plain. Agdam has a railroad station and a highway junction. The population in 1968 was 18,000. Industry includes a butter-and-cheese factory, a winery, a cannery, a metal products and accessories plant, and a machine tool works. There are specialized secondary schools of agriculture and mechanized agriculture and specialized secondary schools of medicine and music. There is a drama theater. Agdam was founded in the mid-18th century and became a city in 1828.
