Faucal Consonant
Faucal Consonant
a kind of obstruent that is combined with a homorganic nasal, of the type bm, dn, and pm. Faucal consonants result when an oral plosive, such as b, d, or p, becomes a pharyngeal plosive as the velum is lowered in the transition from obstruent to nasal. In such cases the obstruent is characterized by some implosion, as in the Russian obman (“deception”) and odnako (“however”).
