Fire-Fighting Aircraft
Fire-Fighting Aircraft
an aircraft used to extinguish fires, principally forest fires. Fire-fighting aircraft are equipped with tanks that contain 600 to 1,000 liters of liquid fire-extinguishing substances—water or special solutions—which the pilot releases above the center of the fire in 1½ to 2 sec. Fire-fighting hydroplanes use their floats as tanks; sections of the floats are filled with water as the hydroplane skims the surface of a river or lake. Specially equipped helicopters can also be used for fire fighting; they can carry up to 8 tons of water. In 1975 the aircraft used in the USSR for fire fighting were the AN-2 and IaK-12 airplanes and MI-6, MI-8, and V-8 helicopters.
