Enisei Hydroelectric Power Plants

one of the largest series of hydroelectric power plants in the USSR. The construction of large hydroelectric power plants with a total power of over 30 GW (gigawatts, millions of kW) is planned for the Enisei River. The Saian Hydroelectric Power Plant (with a power of 6.4 GW), largest hydroelectric power plant of the series, is being constructed (1972) at the point where the Enisei leaves the Zapadnyi Saian Mountains. The Maino and Ochury hydroelectric power plants, with a total power of 0.72 GW, are planned. The Krasnoiarsk Hydroelectric Power Plant (its power capacity in 1971 was 6 GW) has been built at the point where the Enisei crosses spurs of the Vostochnyi Saian Mountains. Construction of three large hydroelectric power plants is planned along the Enisei between the Krasnoiarsk Hydroelectric Power Plant and the river’s mouth: the Middle Enisei (above the mouth of the Angara River), with a power capacity of over 6 GW, the Osinovo (above the confluence of the Enisei and the Podkamennaia Tunguska River), and the Igarka, each with a power output of approximately 5 GW. It is also possible that several more hydroelectric power plants will be built above the Saian Hydroelectric Power Plant. Hydroelectric power plants on the Enisei River will enter into the Central Siberian Integrated Power Grid and will serve as a base for the further development of power-consuming industrial complexes and for the improvement of navigation.
