Established: 1904.
Location:In the Gulf of Mexico, 20 miles south of Gulfport, Mississippi, and 50 miles east of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Facilities:Primitive campsites, lighthouse.
Activities:Camping (limited), boating, fishing, birdwatching.
Special Features:Refuge is the second oldest in the nation, set aside by President Theodore Roosevelt, and is the only one he ever visited.
Habitats: 13,000 acres include the Chandeleur Islands south to Breton Island, barrier islands with low sandy beach whose size and shape are constantly altered by tropical storms, wind, and tidal action. The area above mean high tide is approximately 6,923 acres.
Access: Accessible only by boat. Nesting colonies are closed to visitors; other areas have unlimited access.
Wild life: Brown pelicans, piping plover, terns, nutria, rabbits and loggerhead turtles.
