Acta of the Muscovy State

Acta of the Muscovy State

a three-volume collection of documents on the political and military history of Russia edited by N. A. Popov and D. Ia. Samokvasov and published by the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg, 1890–1901.

The first volume covers the period 1571–1634, the second, 1635–59, and the third, 1660–64. The collection reprints documents relating to the proceedings of the Razriadnyi prikaz (Military Affairs Office) of the Muscovy government on the Cossacks and border troops in the south of Russia from the 1670’s to the 1690’s, on construction of fortifications on the southern border of Russia in 1638, and on the fight against the raids of the Crimean Tatars in the 17th century. A number of documents deal with the military actions of 1614–18, the wars against Poland (1632–34 and 1654–67) and Sweden (1656–58), and the economic, political, and military history of Poland and the Crimea. There is also information on the status of people in civil and military service. This collection of documents has inadequate sources on the history of the class struggle, with the exception of a few documents on the Moscow uprising of 1662.
