eclipse of the Sun

eclipse of the Sun

From the Earth, the Sun and Moon appear to be about the same size: the Sun is about 400 times as big as the Moon but is also 400 times farther away from the Earth. When the Moon is in a direct line between the Sun and the Earth, the Moon’s disk-shaped outline appears to cover the Sun's bright surface, or photosphere. The part of the Earth directly in the Moon’s shadow sees a total eclipse of the Sun; areas around it see a partial eclipse. There are different types of exclipse: total, partial and annular.
