Fitzgerald, John Francis

Fitzgerald, John Francis (“Honey Fitz”)

(1863–1950) businessman, mayor; born in Boston, Mass. (father of Rose Kennedy). After serving as a state senator and U.S. Representative (Dem., Mass.; 1895–1901) and running a newspaper, he became the colorful, popular mayor of Boston (1906–08, 1910–14). His administrations were plagued by charges of corruption and political patronage; his subsequent attempts to be elected as governor and senator failed. He was the grandfather of John, Robert and Edward Kennedy.
