Binford, Lewis R. (Roberts)

(1930– ) anthropologist, archaeologist; born in Norfolk, Va. A faculty member of the University of New Mexico (1970), Binford pioneered the anthropologically-oriented "new archaeology," using quantifiable data to study evolutionary processes in Navajo, Eskimo, and Australian aboriginal cultures. His books include Nunamiut Ethnoarchaeology (1978), In Pursuit of the Past (1983), and Debating Archaeology (1989).
