Brauer, Richard D. Brauer, Richard D. (Dagobert)(1901–77) mathematician; born in Berlin, Germany. Instrumental in the development of modern algebra, he emigrated to America for professional reasons (1933). A National Academy of Sciences member, he chaired the Harvard Mathematics Department (1959–63), was president of the American Mathematical Society, and was awarded the National Medal of Science (1971). |
