Echinosoricinae
Echinosoricinae
(hairy hedgehogs), a subfamily of mammals of the family Erinaceidae of the order Insectivora. The body measures 10-45 cm long; and the tail, 1.5-20 cm. The animals weigh from 50 g to 1.5 kg. Their external appearance resembles that of voles or rats. The tail is naked. The thick fur is coarse or soft; there are no spines. The four genera each have one species. They are distributed in Burma, China, Indochina, the Malay Archipelago, and the Philippines. These animals inhabit mountainous humid forests with dense underbrush; they are also found along the overgrown shores of brooks and marshes. Settling under tree roots, in crevices of rocks, and in dense brush, they feed on insects and invertebrates (they are partly herbivorous). The type representative is the moonrat (Echinosorex gymnurus).
