A genus of small taeniid tapeworms with 2–5 segments in adults–found in the definitive carnivore hosts–dogs, foxes; echinococcal larvae breed within cysts which develop in the liver, brain or elsewhere in the intermediate hosts–sheep, pigs, rodents, horses, humans; exposure and current infection are evaluated by measuring antibodies. See Hydatid disease.
