Iordan, Fedorivanovich

Born Aug. 13 (25), 1800, in Pavlovsk, St. Petersburg Province; died Sept. 19 (Oct. 1), 1883, in St. Petersburg. Russian engraver.

Iordan studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts from 1809 to 1824. At the academy he became a student of N. I. Utkin in 1819. He later studied in Paris and London and lived in Rome from 1835 to 1850. He became an academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1844, becoming a professor there in 1850 and a rector in 1871. Iordan was a master of academic intaglio reproductions on copper plates. He completed over 70 plates, including The Transfiguration (from a painting by Raphael, 1835–50) and Self-portrait (intaglio on copper, 1871). His portraits of Russian cultural figures are among his most valuable works.
