Castro, José Maria Ferreira de

 

Born May 24, 1898, in Salgueiro, Aveiro District. Portuguese writer and public figure.

In the novel A Selva (1930), Castro describes man in conflict with the Brazilian jungle. He realistically depicts Portuguese life in the novels Eternity (1933), Cold Earth (1934), The Storm (1940), and Wool and Snow (1947; Russian translation, 1959). The novel The Bend in the Road (1950) deals with the National Revolutionary War of the Spanish people (1936–1939). The novel The Higher Instinct (1968) depicts the life of the Indians of the Brazilian Amazon.
