Castro Alves, Antonio de

Born Mar. 14, 1847, on the Sabeceiras estate near Curralinho; died July 6, 1871 in Bahia. Brazilian poet.

Castro Alves was the foremost revolutionary romantic poet of Brazil. His drama Gonzaga, or the Revolution in Minas (performed, 1867; published, 1875) lauded the heroes of the revolutionary conspiracy of the late 18th century. Freedom is the major theme of his verse collections Floating Foam (1870) and Slaves (published posthumously, 1883) and his narrative poems The Groans of Africa (1868), and The Slave Ship (1869). He was an ardent defender of the Negroes. In such verse cycles as Paulo Alfonso’s Waterfall (published, 1876), Castro Alves re-created the majestic landscapes of Brazil. His works were paeans to the power of love.
