[bat] (materials) A blanket of insulating material usually 16 inches (41 centimeters) wide and 3 to 6 inches (8 to 15 centimeters) thick, used to insulate building walls and roofs. (mining engineering) A thin layer of coal occurring in the lower part of shale strata that lie above and close to a coal bed.
