Diéguez, Isidoro
Born Jan. 12, 1909; died 1942. Leader of Spanish working-class movement.
Diéguez, a mason, joined the Communist Party in 1932. During the National Revolutionary War of 1936–39 (Spanish Civil War) he served as the secretary of the Madrid division of Spain’s Communist Party. In 1937 he became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Spain; in 1938 he served as a member of its Politboro. In March 1939, Diéguez led an armed struggle against Colonel S. Casado’s counterrevolutionary coup. He emigrated in 1939 but returned to Spain illegally in 1942 to reorganize the Communist Party underground. He was captured by the fascists and killed.
