compressor stall

compressor stall

compressor stallCompressor stall: The compressor blade on the right is in stalled condition.A condition in which the compressor blades stall as the relative airflow meets the blades beyond the critical angle. This can happen at start-up, during rapid acceleration from low RPM, or during a sudden reduction of mass airflow, when a few or all the stages of compressor blades can stall. A compressor stall can also take place during maneuvers as a result of airflow interference in the intake, especially at high angles of attack and low forward speeds. When only a few blades stall, some fluttering or rumbling sounds are heard. However, if the compressor disc stalls, a loud explosive sound is heard followed by a decay in engine RPM and a rapid rise in exhaust gas temperatures. A compressor stall may result in flameout.
