Casson, Lionel Casson, Lionel(1914– ) classicist; born in New York City. He graduated from New York University (NYU) (1934), earned his Ph.D. there (1939), and, beginning as an assistant professor in 1936, spent the rest of his professional career at NYU. A specialist in nautical matters in the ancient world, he wrote Excavations at Nessana (1950) and The Ancient Mariners (1959), as well as Daily Life in Ancient Rome (1975) and Daily Life in Ancient Egypt (1975). He was a member of the advisory boards of American Neptune and Archaeology. |
