Brainerd diarrhoea

Brainerd diarrhoea

An epidemic outbreak of chronic watery diarrhoea of unknown origin, which is characterised by acute onset, prolonged duration (up to months or years), marked urgency, no systemic symptoms and no response to antibiotics. While the epidemiology of Brainerd diarrhoea has features of an infectious origin and have been linked to raw milk consumption and/or untreated water, a causative pathogen has not been identified. Of the ten outbreaks, 9 have occurred in the US; the first outbreak, in Brainerd, Minnesota, affected 117 patients.
