David Kakabadze
Kakabadze, David Nestorovich
Born Aug. 8 (20), 1889, in the village of Kukhi, in present-day Tsulukidze Raion, Georgian SSR; died May 10, 1952, in Tbilisi. Soviet painter.
Kakabadze studied in St. Petersburg from 1910 to 1915 under L. E. Dmitriev-Kavkazskii. He lived in France from 1919 to 1927; from 1928 to 1948 he taught in the Tbilisi Academy of Arts, becoming a professor in 1934. Kakabadze’s works, noted for their ornamentation, are characterized by harmonious combinations of clearly delineated color planes, severity, and precision of design. His works include Self Portrait With Pomegranates (1913); Imeretia Still Life (1918) and Rion Hydroelectric Power Plant (1934), both in the Art Museum of the Georgian SSR, Tbilisi; and the series Svanetiia (pencil and gouache, 1939). Kakabadze also designed theatrical sets and costumes.
