Braganza, Miguel Maria Evaristo de
(also Braganca). Born Oct. 26, 1802, in Lisbon; died Nov. 14, 1866, in Brombach, Germany. King of Portugal from 1828 to 1834; leader of the absolutists. Son of King John VI of Portugal.
When Napoleon’s troops invaded Portugal in 1807, Braganza fled with the royal family to Brazil. Upon returning to Portugal in 1821, he headed the armed struggle of the absolutists against the constitutional monarchists. The Miguelist Wars ended in victory for the constitutionalists.
